Identity Theft Awareness Week: What is identity theft?

January 27, 2025

Our identities are more than just our names. They represent who we are, where we live, and the accounts that power our financial lives. Unfortunately, they have become a prime target for the fastest-growing crime in America: identity theft.

Today marks the start of Identity Theft Awareness Week, which sheds light on this invasive type of crime and helps educate you on ways to shield yourself from it. So, we’ll be offering helpful content each day this week to equip you with what you need to know to protect yourself.

According to Federal Trade Commission data, more than 2.6 million consumers reported more than $10 billion in losses to fraud in 2023!

At bankESB, we want to help ensure you don’t become a victim of this costly crime. That’s why, throughout Identity Theft Awareness week, we’ll explain more about identity theft, including what it is, the common types, ways to protect yourself, and what to do if you become a victim.

What is identity theft?
Identity theft is a type of crime where fraudsters attempt to steal your personal and financial information for their gain. This information includes your:

  • Name and address
  • Credit card or bank account information
  • Online banking access credentials
  • Social Security number and other identifying information
  • Mobile phone, e-mail and social media accounts
  • Medical insurance information

They may use this stolen information to:

  • Make fraudulent purchases with your credit or debit cards
  • Steal money from your accounts
  • Pass counterfeit checks
  • Open utilities, such as cellular services
  • File fraudulent tax returns to steal your refund
  • Obtain medical care using your name
  • Pretend to be you if they commit a crime
  • Apply for jobs

Therefore, it’s important to always take steps to protect your personal and financial information from anyone who doesn’t need it. And if you’re asked to provide it—especially if you didn’t initiate the email, call, or text—be cautious about who you’re giving it to.
